UPDATED: Med Books for First Year- What You Really Need to Know

Note: Im also selling my old books, for those interested, here are the prices :) http://hopingtobeapinoymedstudent.blogspot.com/2013/04/med-books-for-sale.html

Ok, this was one problem that i encountered during my first year, which books to buy, the prices, which ones did the professors really use, etc?

FIRST, I would advise you NOT to buy all the books in one go, unless you know you are a bookworm, and you're studying habit involves reading every chapter instead of using reviewers.

Here are some books that I found most useful during my first year:

-  ANATOMY: the doctors use both Snell and Moore. Certain doctors rely solely on Snell, others on both. One book that you should buy is Netter. Cant Live without it, extremely useful during dissections, and if you area visual learner.

- BIOCHEMISTRY: you can use Harpers or Devlin. Harpers is straight to the point, a bit difficult to understand, but the chapters are short. Devlin discussesthe topics well, but the chapters are a bit long, so if you dontmind reading a lot, this is the book for you. One book that got me through biochem was Lippincott. Extremely easy to understand and a lot of pictures too. There's another booktoo, i'll try uploading it when i can, they call it Digging Up the bones for Biochem. Very very VERY helpful, short, concise, pretty much like Biochem for Dummies.

-PHYSIOLOGY: Guyton or Ganong. guyton is easy to understand but there are a lot of chapters to cover pertopic even if they're short. Its also non-science student friendly. Review of Medical Physio by Ganong is just what it says it is, its a REVIEW. Thats why its a bit difficult to understand, but very concise with their discussion. I used Guyton a lot.

- ANATOMY-Histology and Embryology.

For histology, you must have an atlas for when you're looking at slides in microscopy. You can go for Wheater's, or Di Fiore. Personally, i liked Di Fiore, even though ididnt have one. By the time i knew di fiore was pretty good, i had already bought Wheaters. :)) most BS Human Bio students from La Salle Taft were already using this~nakitingin lang ako.

Aother thing, you guys should buy the Histology book by Dr. Edgardo Gonzales,  they sell it at school or cem bookstore. Doc Ed is a doctor lecturer so its really important to get this book. Everything he teaches is in this. Hahahaha hope you enjoy his class!

Hahahahaha For Embryology, Langman's was pretty good with the discussions. And if you can get a copy of Kates- kind of like a booklet/reviewer made by the upper classmen and Doc Jah, its pretty good, and covers everything. Lang,an lacks certain info, while the Kates booklet lacks the small discussions of the processes, so i guess its better ifyou buy them both.

Ummm, cant remember what else, lemme know if you guys need more info regarding some other books. :)

Also, here's a link to Pinoy.Md of people selling second hand med books. Much much cheaper. :)

  2. Thanks sooo much for posting this! Which version of Netter are you using, if you don't mind me asking (my husband says he already has Netter)? I wonder if it's cheaper to buy books here vs over there.

    1. Hey! How have you guys been? :) im currently using Netter atlas of anatomy 5th edition, i think its ok to use old versions of it since they're practically the same drawings, small changes here and there. :) try comparing the prices na lang, i'll try to get a copy of the first year book prices next week so you can see which would be cheaper. :)

    2. That's very, very nice of you!!! I'd love to compare prices. Did you use the BRS Physiology a lot during the first year? I read that a lot of med students here used that book a lot to review for the boards (USMLE). We hope to take the Step 1 of the boards at the end of our second year so I'd like to make sure that we get the right set of books while we're still here/as soon as we get there. Looking forward to meeting you!!! We have less than a month to go before leaving for the Philippines and things are getting pretty hectic! I'm sure it's the same for you as the finals are approaching. What are your plans for your upcoming vacation before second year starts? :)

    1. Di fiore is optional, if you have wheaters ok ka na rin naman. :) yung sa snell, check if its by SYSTEMS or by REGIONS. by regions kasi yung ginaga,it ng mga prof. :) ifyou're comfortable with reading on your ipad or other gadget, ok na kahit di ka na bumiling books. May iba kasi mas prefer na book.

  4. awesome site ! all are good books ! ! No doubt. Also get a not so old Medical reference like Cecil's Medicine to correlate your understanding of these basics with some clinical stuff. The topics might be more interesting than you think. and kill the boredom.

  6. Kate's booklet was a ripoff. Doc Jah gave us updated handouts every lecture, therefore I wasted my money on that booklet

  7. Not really a rip off. During thattime, the class didnt push thru with buying the booklet, instead, we photocopied one for php 80 only which is pretty good since the handouts from doc jah's lectures were several pages long, saved us a lot from costs in printing/photocopying.

  8. Hello Again! =) I just wanted to ask you about the books, I don't really know if there is already an available list of books to buy for us 1st yr med students... & Not to mention, I still don't have any clue as to where nor how to get the list. . . I've read your previous posts about the books and commented on one as well. I guess right now, I'm just probably a bit torn between the questions "Should I start reading or not?" and if I should, "do I have the right references to read?". . . I guess it's that feeling like, it's a "countdown" and, kind of nerve-racking to think about hehe...& well... Just hoping for an advice from someone who knows what it was like & experienced it all. :-)

Hope to get a reply from you. Thank you so much for doing this(your blog) it is so much helpful. . . especially to us(and to those who are experiencing the same things as I am =j...) Thank u =j

  10. Hello :) I just wanna ask about the subjects for 1st year. do you have gross anatomy? do you dissect and study cadavers in the lab? how many students per cadaver? for all the subjects, do they curve the grades ? :p thank youu!

  11. @Anonymous

Hi anon! Thanks for checking out the blog! :) yup, we do have Anatomy for first year and covers gross anatomy, histology, and embryology :) we do dissect cadavers, theres about 8 students per cadaver. In the group of 8, half dissect first, and the other half stay int he briefing room and have a discussion on the topic. After an hour and a half, exchange na. :) for the grades, ok naman yung grading, not sure about the curving part tho. :)) will check on it.
